Operating systems types







As computers have progressed and developed so have the operating systems.
 Below is a basic list of the different operating systems and a few examples of operating systems that fall into each of the categories. 
GUI (Graphical User Interface) contains graphics and icons and is commonly navigated by using a computer mouse.                          Some examples, System 7.x,Windows 98,Windows CE.
§   Multiuser: allows two or more users to run programs at the same time. This type of operating system may be used for just a few people or hundreds of them. In fact, there are some operating systems that are used to allow thousands of people to run programs at the same time.
Some examples,Linux ,Unix ,Windows 2000.
§   Multiprocessing: supports running a program on more than one CPU.

§  Multitasking: allows more than one program to run concurrently,Unix, Windows 2000
§   Multithreading: allows different parts of a single program to run concurrently.
Some examples,Linux, Unix, Windows 2000

§  Real time: responds to input instantly. General-purpose operating systems, such as DOS and UNIX, are not real -time.
